Redken Shades ALK™ Liquid-Cream Demi is an ammonia-free, alkaline demi-permanent oxidative hair color. It is designed to combine the performance of permanent color with the conditioning/glossing feel of a demi.

What “alkaline” means

• Alkaline pH: When mixed with Redken 10-volume Pro-Oxide Cream Developer at the recommended 1:1.5 ratio, the mixture has a pH of approximately 9.8–10.0.

  Instead of ammonia, Shades ALK uses ethanolamine (MEA) as its alkaline agent.
  
• 
  The higher pH helps open/swell the cuticle enough for oxidative color molecules to penetrate, allowing up to 1 level of lift and substantial color deposit.
  

What makes it “demi”

Shades ALK is not a traditional acidic gloss like Shades EQ. It is an alkaline demi, meaning it has more color penetration and oxidative activity than an acidic demi. Redken states that it can provide:
